The Iron Sheik was an Iranian-American professional and amateur wrestler, and actor. He was the only Iranian champion in WWE history, as he won the WWF World Heavyweight Championship in 1983. He was part of a tag team with Nikolai Volkoff. He was also known as Ali Vaziri, Col. Mustafa, Great Hossein Arab, and Muhammad Farouk. He also gained popularity as a radio show guest.

The Iron Sheik moved to the U.S. c. 1970. He was assistant coach of two U.S. Olympic squads, and was 1971’s Amateur Athletic Union Greco-Roman wrestling champion and gold medalist. He was also assistant coach to the U.S. team at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, and turned to wrestling the same year. He was married to Caryl Peterson, until his death, with whom he had three children.

The Iron Sheik was a Shia Muslim.
