Prakash Amritraj claims Novak Djokovic is closer to retirement because of Rafael Nadal

Former Indian-American tennis player Prakash Amritraj has claimed that 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic is closer to his retirement than people think. He believes that the Serbian tennis ace is feeling the void due to Rafael Nadal’s absence from the tour, whom Djokovic called his most important rival.

The former tennis player who is now an expert talked about the nearing end for Djokovic and how many more titles the Serbian can win. Amritraj believes that Djokovic has the gas for at least one more title. He gave several examples from tennis as well as from other sports to explain his point.

Amritraj claimed that just like Nadal won the Australian Open and French Open in 2022 and Tiger Woods won one last Masters, Djokovic will also win one at least more Grand Slam title. With the Paris Olympics in sight and the 2024 Wimbledon Championship win closer than ever, Amritraj backs the Serbian to add another feather to his cap.

He won 3 out of 4 (Grand Slam titles) last year, so he is still playing dominant tennis. Every athlete has that one last trick up their sleeve. Like Rafa won that Australian Open (2022), I think that was it for him. Tiger Woods when he won that last Masters...I think Djokovic has one more in his bag, at least. I think we are closer than we think (to the end).

Also, the 37-year-old is closer to winning his eighth Wimbledon title and equalling Roger Federer’s record. Djokovic is already into the semifinal where he faces Lorenzo Musetti. The seven-time champion might face Carlos Alcaraz in the final for a second consecutive year.

Prakash Amritraj explains his claim about Novak Djokovic’s retirement

The former Indian-American tennis player did not just make a guess but Prakash Amritraj firmly believes that Novak Djokovic is closer to his retirement than everyone else thinks. He also cited the reasons for his opinion.

Amritraj claimed that Rafael Nadal leaving the tour will hit Djokovic hard just like it did to Nadal when Roger Federer retired.

I think the reality of Rafa leaving hits him in a certain way, just like when Federer left it hit Rafa in a certain way. Djokovic has said, 'Rafa Nadal is the most important rival I've had'...when he is gone, you have to find new motivation, and when you have every record in the book, where do you find that?
Prakash Amritraj added

He, however, claimed that the Serbian is looking for at least one more Grand Slam title. Also, the 2024 Paris Olympics is important for Djokovic, Amritraj claimed. It is worth mentioning that an Olympic gold has eluded the Serbian over the years. Djokovic will be aiming to end the drought this year.
